shivling worship importance

The meaning of Shivling is ‘Creation Light’ i.e. the symbol of Shiva or the original-eternal form of Shiva. By worshiping Shivling, God is quickly pleased and one gets relief from sufferings. But there are some rules of Shivling worship, which are necessary to be followed. After performing Jalabhishek or Rudrabhishek on Shivling, sandalwood paste is applied and Belpatra, Bhang, Dhatura and fruits etc. are offered.

Rules related to Shivling Parikrama

  • Generally all the deities are circumambulated completely. But there is a law to do half parikrama of Shivling. However, half parikrama of the Shivling should be done and half parikrama should be done.
  • While circumambulating the Shivling, pay special attention to the direction as well. In all worships, the circumambulation of the deities starts from the right side. But the circumambulation of Shivling is done from the left side.
  • After circumambulating till the reservoir, one should turn back in the opposite direction and do half circumambulation. In this way the circumambulation is completed.
  • The reservoir should never be crossed while doing parikrama. It is considered very inauspicious. This causes loss of physical energy. Because the reservoir of Shivling is considered a storehouse of energy and power.
  • It is not considered improper to do complete circumambulation of the reservoir covered with straw, wood, leaf, stone, brick etc.
